Today is the last day to claim your cut of Verizon’s $100 million settlement

Monday was the last day for some Verizon customers to apply for refunds as part of a $100 million settlement from a class-action lawsuit.

Earlier this year, the wireless carrier sent an email or postcard to eligible customers informing them to file a claim by April 15 to receive up to $100, which is the result of a lawsuit that accused Verizon of charging “unfair and undisclosed adequately. .”

Those interested in filing a claim have until 11:59 p.m. PT on a special website, where they have to fill out a form with the required information, including the phone number attached to the Verizon account and options on how to receive the money, such as check, Venmo or bank wire.

Payments are at least $15 and may be more depending on how long the customer has been using Verizon and the number of customers filing claims. Claims must be filed to receive payment and only customers with a postpaid wireless account or data plan from January 1, 2016 to November 8, 2023, are eligible.

What is a lawsuit?
At issue were Verizon’s “administrative fees,” which the plaintiffs said were “misleading” because the fees were not disclosed in their plans’ advertised monthly prices and were charged in a “misleading and unfair manner.”

Verizon has denied the allegations and said in an earlier statement that it “clearly identifies and explains the administrative charges to its wireless users multiple times during sales transactions, as well as in its marketing, contracts and billing.”

A company spokesperson said the charge “helps our company recover from certain regulatory compliance and network-related costs.”

The settlement is the culmination of four separate lawsuits brought together in New Jersey courts, the same state where Verizon is headquartered.

The so-called “junk fees” are not only derided by consumers but have also drawn the ire of the Biden administration. Last October, the Federal Trade Commission introduced proposed rules that would prohibit businesses from charging hidden or misleading fees and require companies to show the full price up front.
