Serena Williams sees echoes of Roger Federer in Zendaya’s film “Challengers”

Tennis icon Serena Williams found herself reflecting on the life of another legend, Roger Federer, and his relationship with his wife Mirka while watching Zendaya’s new film, “Challengers.”

In her Vogue film review, Williams delves into how the film accurately portrays the world of tennis. He highlights the dynamic between Zendaya’s character, Tashi, and the two influential men in her life—her husband and coach, Art (Mike Faist), and her former flame and tennis rival, Patrick (Josh O’Connor).

“I also know Seni. A lot of male tennis players really depend on their wives and girlfriends,” Williams wrote. “Just look at someone like Roger Federer: he used to hit with his wife, Mirka, and they were like glue.”

Williams further observes how the film captures the isolation that the best players in men’s tennis often face. However, he also acknowledged his past “co-dependence” on his sister, Venus Williams, at the start of their careers.

Although she found empathy for some of the male characters in the film, Williams admitted that she found Tashi’s character “brutal”. However, she recognizes the difficult choices competitive athletes face when finding a partner who truly understands their unique lifestyle.

Williams’ reflections are drawn from his own career. He retired from professional tennis in 2022 to spend more time with his family. Since then, Williams has focused on new ventures such as her makeup brand Wyn Beauty and her wellness line, Will Perform.

Federer, who also recently retired due to injury, echoed similar sentiments in his retirement announcement. He emphasized the invaluable support of his wife, Mirka, and their four children throughout his career.
