Over 100 arrested and 4 officers injured during pro-Palestinian protest at Emerson College
More than 100 people were arrested Wednesday at Emerson College in Boston during a pro-Palestinian protest, according to the Boston Police Department.
There were 108 people arrested, and four officers were injured, according to John Boyle with Boston police. All of the injuries were non-life threatening.
New York Times reporter Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs posted a video of the protest at X.
“Arrested protesters chanted ‘we’re keeping us safe!’ from inside the (police) wagon, while those outside were singing along,” the reporter posted on X from the protest site.
It is not clear how many people have been arrested. CNN’s calls to Boston Police and city officials have not been returned.
A social media post from Emerson Students for Justice in Palestine, also stated that more than 100 people had been detained.
Video from CNN affiliate WHDH shows officers in riot gear approaching protesters overnight. The scene has been cleared, the combined video shows.
Emerson College President Jay Bernhardt and other school officials wrote to students Wednesday saying the encampment set up days earlier violated city ordinances.
“Emerson College has previously communicated information we received from the City of Boston regarding ordinance violations to the protestors multiple times over several days,” the letter reads.
“We support our community’s right to express their views through protest,” the letter said. “However, they must do so in a manner consistent with the laws of the City of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” the university’s letter states.
“Our top priority is the safety and welfare of our community, and we are deeply concerned that protesters risk legal consequences beyond Emerson’s control when they fail to comply with city and state laws,” the university said.
