Drew Carey explains why he helps impressive writers pay for their meals

Drew Carey picked up a huge tab last year and has no regrets.

The cast and host of “The Price is Right” covered meals for members of the Writers Guild of America at Bob’s Big Boy and Swingers in Los Angeles during their 148-day strike last summer and fall.

Carey appeared at the WGA Awards on Sunday night, where she joked about the bill they phoned.

“Honestly, I had no idea it was going to cost me so much money,” Carey said on stage. “The last time, I think the total bill (during the 2007 strike) was like $67,000, fifteen years ago. I thought it would be the same thing, but then part of you decided, ‘Oh yeah, I’ll get a shake and dessert.’”

He said his accountant contacted him out of concern about how long the strike would last.

“When the bills started piling up, my accountant called and said, ‘Is there any way we can dial this back?'” he said.

But Carey continued to pay, he said Sunday, because “it was the right thing to do.”

“You writers, not all of you, the writers of ‘The Drew Carey Show’ — made me a millionaire. Everyone in this room is making some actors a million. And you deserve all the money you get.”

Carey reportedly spent an estimated $1 million on the food.

“Really appreciate all the love and thanks. It’s as [worth] every cent. But if you really want to thank someone for the meal, thank Bruce Helford and all the writers of the ‘Drew Carey Show,’” Carey wrote in X in September. “They helped make me rich enough to buy it, No writer, no $. That easy.”
