The ACLU is urging universities to allow campus protests

The American Civil Liberties Union sent a letter to leaders at public and private universities on Thursday, urging them to make room for student speech and protest.

“As you respond to the activism of your students (and faculty and staff), it is important that you not sacrifice the principles of academic freedom and free speech that are central to the educational mission of your esteemed institution,” said the letter from ACLU executive director Anthony D. Romero. and its National Legal Director David Cole.
The organization lists five “foundational guardians” to ensure free speech and academic freedom on campus. But some of the guidance also highlights challenges for college administrators. The second fence reads:

“They must protect students from discriminatory harassment and targeted violence, but may not punish people for being in favor of the war in Gaza, even if expressed in very offensive terms.”
The letter also refers to previous legal cases and historic moments in which law enforcement used “unwarranted and excessive force in response to protests.” And it warned protesters that “violence is not an acceptable protest tactic.”
