Elizabeth Holmes is getting more time off her sentence
Disgraced former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes may be out of prison months earlier than expected, according to projected release dates posted by the Bureau of Prisons.
The Bureau of Prisons’ online database currently shows that Holmes’ expected release date from a Texas prison is August 16, 2032 — a slight reduction from his previous release date of December 29, 2032.
This is the second reduction in less than a year: He previously served a sentence of 11 years and three months about two years ago last July.
The Bureau of Prisons did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment. However, the bureau previously told CNN that it could not comment on the conditions of any individual inmate, but said that inmates can earn good behavior time that counts toward their projected release date. Eligible inmates are currently eligible for up to 54 days of GCT time for each year of the sentence imposed by the court.
Inmates have other ways to earn time credit while incarcerated, including participation in various prison programs. These factors that go into calculating the estimated release date are not unique to the Holmes case, but are standard for inmates, a bureau spokeswoman previously told CNN.
Holmes was once an icon in the tech world, serving as the poster child for Silicon Valley’s ambition and limitless potential. He is now one of the few tech executives to serve prison time after being convicted earlier last year on multiple counts of defrauding investors while running Theranos.
Theranos was worth $9 billion at its peak – making Holmes a paper billionaire. The company came under fire after a Wall Street Journal investigation in 2015 reported that Theranos had performed only about a dozen of the hundreds of tests it offered using its proprietary technology, and with questionable accuracy. It also learned that Theranos relies on third-party devices from traditional blood-testing companies rather than its own technology.
