Protests continued on campuses across the US as more arrests were announced. This is the latest

A wave of pro-Palestinian campus protests is raging across the US, with hundreds of people arrested at universities across the country this week.

At New York’s Columbia University, the center of the demonstration, protesting students said they would not disperse until the school agreed to sever ties with Israeli academic institutions and divest itself of funding from entities linked to Israel, among other demands. Protesters on other campuses had similar demands.

Campus encampments spread across the country have brought together students from various backgrounds – including Palestinians, Arabs, Jews and Muslims – to denounce Israel’s bombing of Gaza.

Here are the latest developments:

Columbia University: The faculty senate is expected to vote on a resolution reprimanding the school’s president, Minouche Shafik, on Friday over some of his decisions, according to The New York Times. Shafik has faced criticism for authorizing the police to shut down student protests on campus.

University of Southern California: The university canceled its major commencement ceremony next month, citing “new security measures have been implemented.” Almost 100 people were arrested on campus.

Emory University: 28 people were arrested, including 20 Emory community members, during a protest at the school, Vice President of Public Safety Cheryl Elliott said. Troopers deployed pepper spray “to control an unruly crowd” during the protest, the Georgia State Patrol said. A group of Democratic Georgia state lawmakers condemned the “excessive force used by the Georgia State Patrol” during the arrest at Emory.

Brown University: The university identified about 130 students who allegedly violated the school’s code of conduct that prohibits camping on campus. Students found responsible will be subject to disciplinary action depending on their behavior and other factors, including any prior conduct violations, the university said.

Emerson College: More than 100 people were arrested and four police officers were injured during a cleanup of encampments at the Boston liberal arts college, according to the Boston Police Department. President Jay Bernhardt said he recognized and respected the “civic activism and spirit that fueled the protests” after dozens of arrests.

Indiana University: 33 people were arrested on campus following a camping protest.

George Washington University: DC Metropolitan Police are being asked to assist in relocating “unauthorized protest encampments” on campus, university president Ellen M. Granberg said. The decision was made “after several orders made by the GWPD to move to an alternative demonstration site on campus were ignored by the campers,” he said.

University of California, Los Angeles: A “demonstration with an encampment” was formed at UCLA on Thursday.

Northeastern University: An encampment formed at Northeastern University in Boston, where dozens of protesters were seen forming a human chain around several tents.

Other campuses: Since last Thursday, there have been protests on several campuses, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Michigan, the University of New Mexico, the University of California, Berkeley, Yale University, Harvard University, Princeton University and the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota.
