Progress in negotiations between Columbia protesters and administrators, the university said

Negotiations between Columbia University administrators and pro-Palestinian protesters who have occupied campus grounds with a sprawling encampment “have shown progress and are proceeding as planned,” the school said in a statement late Thursday.

“For several days, a small group of faculty, administrators and University Senators have been in dialogue with student organizers to discuss the basics of decamping, dispersing, and following University policy going forward,” the university said.
“We have our demands; they have theirs.”

The university also denied rumors that the NYPD had been called to campus, calling them “false.”

Some context: Columbia announced late Tuesday that it had given the timers a midnight deadline to agree to dismantle their camp. But the university later said earlier Wednesday that it had extended negotiations for another 48 hours. If no agreement is reached, the school has said it will consider “alternative options,” which many protesters interpreted to mean calling the police to clear the site.
