FlowGPT created a GenAI App Store for wild chatbot models

FlowGPT is an alternative to the OpenAI GPT Store that, unlike the latter, allows chatbot creators to build their own GenAI-powered model apps based on popular generative AI models such as Meta Llama 2, OpenAI DALL-E3 and Google Gemini.

While the OpenAI Store limits users to creating chatbots based on what is already available on the platform, FlowGPT allows chatbot creators to go wild with their creativity and build their own. Chatbots can also be made available later to people while earning tips for their contributions.

Built by UC Berkeley computer science dropout Jay Dang and former engineering manager at Amazon, Lifan Wang, FlowGPT describes FlowGPT as an “ecosystem” for GenAI-powered apps — a collection of infrastructure and creator tools tied to the marketplace and community of consumer GenAI apps. App users get a feed of apps and a collection of apps recommended to them based on trending categories, while creators get the option to customize the behavior of GenAI apps.

Interaction with the GenAI app is similar to a chat window, as in OpenAI, typing prompts, thumbs up or sharing links to conversations. Each app also comes with a description of when it was created, how often the app has been used, and which model is recommended for use.

Some of the apps available on the platform are, unfortunately, jailbreaks designed to bypass the model’s security measures, along with some that claim to be malware code and dating simulators. Much of this can cause harm, especially to those who claim to be professionals or health providers, with studies already showing that ChatGPT rarely uses referrals to specific resources for help on sensitive topics such as sexual abuse.

FlowGPT offers a toggle to filter ‘sensitive content’ with an option to report apps that violate Community Guidelines. The page, however, has a moderation problem.
