Ex-Google employee says firing for protesting Israeli contracts illegal

A group of workers at Alphabet Inc’s Google ( GOOGL.O ) opens a new tab has filed a complaint with the US labor board alleging the tech company illegally fired about 50 workers for protesting its cloud contract with the Israeli government.

A one-page complaint filed late Monday with the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) alleges that by firing workers, Google interfered with their rights under US labor law to advocate for better working conditions.

Google this month said it had fired 28 workers who disrupted work at an unspecified office location while protesting Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion contract awarded jointly to Google and Amazon.com ( AMZN.O ), opening a new tab to supply the Israeli government with services cloud The company said last week that about 20 more workers had been fired for protesting the contract while in the office.

In a statement on Tuesday, Google said the employee’s behavior was “totally unacceptable” and made other employees feel threatened and unsafe.

“We have carefully verified and reconfirmed that each person whose employment has been terminated was directly and definitely involved in the harassment in our building,” the company said.

The workers claimed the project supported the development of Israeli military equipment. Google said the Nimbus contract “is not intended for highly sensitive, classified or military workloads related to weapons or intelligence services.”
