Turkmenistan vows to complete gas project

Ashgabat is committed to completing the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project with regional countries, said CEO of TAPI Pipeline Company Limited Muhammetmyrat Amanov.

He said Turkmenistan has advanced energy projects with strong commitment and in accordance with international law, said a press release issued here.

“Turkmenistan made significant progress in the TAPI natural gas pipeline, which will supply 33 billion cubic meters to South Asia annually,” he said.

Speaking at the Turkmen Energy Investment Forum (TEIF 2024) currently being held in Paris, Amanov emphasized that the Turkmenistan section of the pipeline has been completed and ongoing discussions to advance the project beyond Turkmenistan are in line with international standards.

He said the project envisages environmental sustainability by leveraging natural gas to significantly reduce emissions compared to coal and oil, thereby addressing indoor pollution and improving regional air quality.

Turkmenistan implemented the project in compliance with international law, stressed Amanov. “Based on the progress of the ongoing project, Turkmenistan remains committed to upholding international law, fulfilling its obligations and complying with international norms and rules.” This approach confirms Turkmenistan’s dedication to global cooperation and legal integrity in implementing the TAPI project.

Looking ahead, the project’s focus shifts to the Herat Offtake Strategy in Afghanistan, which will play an important role in environmental protection by reducing air pollution, while also contributing to maintaining public safety, he said.

The company’s CEO said it would provide an initial revenue stream and boost lender confidence.
