Widespread destruction to a refugee camp in central Gaza after the reported withdrawal of Israeli forces
Israeli forces have withdrawn from the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza after days of deadly military operations, according to the Civil Defense Directorate in the besieged area.
Geolocation video shows widespread destruction in the area, with several apartment blocks destroyed or badly damaged.
The directorate said that its crews had been able to recover some bodies from under the rubble, but the evacuation of others would require heavy excavation equipment.
Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal told CNN the situation was “tragic.”
“There was a large scale of destruction, including residential buildings and infrastructure.”
Basal estimates that about 500 people have been killed, injured, detained or missing in military operations. CNN could not confirm the estimate and has contacted the Israeli military about the scope and purpose of its operation in Nuseirat.
The mayor of Nuseirat, Iyad Maghari, said that a week of Israeli attacks in the area had “deprived residents of the most basic human services, such as water, sanitation and waste collection.”
Maghari said about 25,000 square meters of roads, water wells and generators that pump water have been destroyed.
He said that about 20,000 tons of waste accumulated on the roads and around the shelters due to the lack of fuel and the destruction of municipal vehicles, causing the problem of fleas.
The sewage system was badly damaged, he said, with more than 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) of pipes destroyed.
“The municipality of Nuseirat is experiencing a shortage of diesel required to operate water wells … in addition to operating sewage treatment plants,” said Maghari.
