UT Austin police gave the “all clear” for orders to disperse as authorities arrested more than 30 protesters

The University of Texas at Austin Police Department said Wednesday afternoon that the order to disperse on the South Mall has been lifted.

As of 9 pm. CT, 34 arrests were made by law enforcement on the UT Austin campus, according to a post X from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Hours earlier, university police had warned students in an email that they faced more arrests if they did not disperse from the site.

Assistant Police Chief Ashley Griffin wrote in an email that protesters are breaking the law and can be arrested for disorderly conduct, disorderly conduct, and obstructing a highway or other thoroughfare, according to an email obtained by CNN.

Some context: The Palestine Solidarity Committee in Austin organized a walkout and occupation on the South Lawn of a school in Austin.

It led to multiple confrontations between police officers, state troopers “in riot gear with batons” and students, Amelia Kimball, associate managing editor at The Daily Texan, told CNN News Central.

“I don’t think the students expected this kind of reaction,” he said.
