Scottie Scheffler Says Winning Masters Doesn’t Define Him: ‘I Believe In The Creator’

Golfer No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, says he is at a crossroads just hours before the 2024 Masters tournament.

The 27-year-old said being ahead during the final round of the competition put pressure on him and left him overwhelmed.

During the postgame press conference, Scheffler told reporters, “I sat with my guys this morning, I was a little emotional, I told them, I wish I didn’t want to win as bad as I did or as bad as I did. I think it will make mornings easier.”

He continued, “But I love to win. I hate to lose. I really do. And when you’re here in the biggest moments, when I’m sitting there with the lead on Sunday, I really want to win badly.”

Advice from his friends led the champion to take the competition out of his hands and place it in God’s hands.

“My friends told me this morning, my victory is safe on the cross. And that’s a pretty special feeling to know that I’m safe forever, and it doesn’t matter if I win this tournament or lose this tournament. My identity is peace forever,” he shared, referring to the spiritual victory of salvation through Christ.

Scheffler approached the green confidently and walked away Masters champion for the second time in his career.

“I believe that today’s plan was laid out many years ago, and I can’t do anything to mess with that plan. I was given this gift of talent, and I use it for the glory of God. That’s all,” he said during conference after the tournament.

Scheffler said his recent wins and the game of golf don’t define him, but God does.

“Golf is something I do. It’s a big part of my life, but it doesn’t define me as a person. I happen to be good some weeks…and the next week I’m not that good,” he shared. “I’m a faithful man. I believe in the Creator. I believe in Jesus. Ultimately, I think that’s what defines me the most.”

Giving glory to God is nothing new for Scheffler. Throughout his career, he has shared his faith.

As CBN News reported, when Scheffler won his first major championship, the 2022 Masters, he shared he was “trying to glorify God” through his golf career.

“It all comes back to my faith,” Scheffler said after being asked how he balances his desire to play golf competitively without letting it define him as an individual. “The reason why I play golf is this: I try to glorify God and all that He has done in my life.”

Scheffler also said his wife, Meredith, always prayed for him to experience peace — something he always wanted on the golf course. In addition, he sought to experience the “presence of God.”

“Every day we go out there, Meredith always prays for peace, because that’s what I want to feel on the golf course, peace and fun and just feel His presence,” he said. “So that’s his prayer every day. That’s my prayer, and I really felt it today. I feel calm.”

Now, the couple is awaiting the arrival of their first child.

“At the moment, the happiest thing is not winning the Masters, it’s the baby that’s coming soon,” he said before the final round of the tournament.
