Qatar refuses to close Hamas office “as long as mediation channels continue”

Qatar has yet to decide whether it will close the Hamas office in Doha, the Qatari capital, as it questions both the Palestinian militant group and Israel’s commitment to reaching a hostage ceasefire deal in Gaza, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Tuesday.

Qatar has come under pressure from Israeli and US politicians over its links to Palestinian militant groups. But it said on Tuesday that there would be no need to close Hamas’s political bureau in Doha provided that lines of communication remain open.

“If the office is performing that role, as in the ongoing mediation efforts, then there is no justification to end the presence of the (Hamas) office in Doha,” spokesman Majed Al Ansari said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“We call on both parties to show more flexibility and seriousness in negotiations,” said Ansari.

Talks stall: A meeting between negotiators in Qatar has stalled amid a stalemate in months of indirect talks between Hamas and Israel. The lack of progress, coupled with criticism of Qatar’s relationship with Hamas, has prompted Doha to reconsider its role as an interlocutor in the stalled talks.
