‘Duck Dynasty’ Star Reveals The Verse That Led His Family To Enter The Entertainment Industry

The New Testament passage reads, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and dread, but a spirit of strength, love and self-discipline” (NLT).

“[God] said He will be with us wherever we go, so we just ask for God’s mercy on us, His protection on us,” he said. “God said to go into all the world. So when someone asks me, ‘Should I be in entertainment as a believer?’ I’m like, ‘Yes, we need more people in entertainment. We need more light in that [industry].’”

Newly released data from AllConnect found that the average internet user spends nearly seven hours a day looking at a screen — a 60% increase from before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. And children aged 8-10 spend about six hours a day staring on screens, while children aged 11 to 14 use the internet for more than nine hours per day.

All that to say, Robertson realizes there are big forces in the media industry. So why not harness it for good?

“Whenever we start ‘Duck Dynasty,’ it’s not necessarily a faith show,” Robertson said, noting there’s no way to “go around” talking about their Christian faith, “because that’s who we are.”

He continued, “The hope is that people might look at our story and look at our testimony and say, ‘Why is [your life] different? Why do you seem to have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness?’ It’s because we have the [Holy] Spirit living in us and we can tell [people] less about what Jesus has done for us. It’s not because we’re so great. This is because we have the Spirit of God living in us and we try to live our lives like that.”

With people spending one to two hours a week in church and dozens more online, Robertson sees an opportunity to meet people — especially nonbelievers who don’t go to church regularly — where they are: in front of TVs, smartphones and tablets.

Over time, more than anything the Robertsons say or do during each episode of “Duck Dynasty,” it’s the family prayer at the end of each show that leaves the biggest impression on viewers.

“People come to us with tears and say, ‘My husband now goes to church because he saw a real man who loves Jesus,’ and, ‘Our children will not let us eat before praying now, because of your offering,’ ” Robertson pondered. “So we’ve just seen this amazing way of how entertainment shapes people and changes people and how it can move people.’”

“You look back at Jesus and He tells parables, He tells stories because stories do move people and people connect in that way,” he continued, noting it was a response to their reality series that led the Robertsons to launch their own production studio, Tread Lively, who is behind “The Blind,” a film about the faith journey of Phil and Kay Robertson, the father and mother of the “Duck Dynasty” family.

The film debuted in theaters last year and is currently streaming on Great American Pure Flix.
