Biden calls for tripling tariffs on Chinese metals
US President Joe Biden has called for a tripling of tariffs on some steel and aluminum from China.
It is the latest protectionist policy Mr. Biden has to uphold as he campaigns for re-election against Donald Trump, who is known for his tough trade stance on China.
The White House said the proposal was intended to protect US jobs from “unfair” competition.

The White House has denied that the tariffs – which would raise key border tax rates from an average of 7.5% to 25% on a fraction of imports – would raise prices in the US.
Mr Biden discussed the proposal – and other pro-manufacturing efforts – at a campaign rally in Pittsburgh, the main base of the US steel industry.
He and Mr. Trump are competing for support from working-class voters, who could be a decisive voting block in the November election.
In addition to the tariffs, the White House said it would launch an investigation into unfair trade practices in China’s shipbuilding and logistics sectors, acting on requests from the US Steelworkers union and others.

Many steel and aluminum imports from China already face border taxes, including a 25% duty on certain steel products, which the US placed under former president Donald Trump using national security justifications.

The tariffs mark a significant shift in Washington’s approach to trade, which has long been dominated by a pro-free market trade consensus.
