Giancarlo Esposito, best known for portraying the creepy Gus Fring in “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” has opened up about a dark period in his life before his iconic role. In a recent interview on Sirius XM’s “Jim & Sam” show, Esposito revealed that in 2008, he was so desperate financially that he considered ending his life so that his children would benefit from his life insurance.

The actor, now a mainstay in major productions like “The Mandalorian” and “The Boys,” was on the brink of bankruptcy when he began considering the drastic move. The potential to provide for his four children was, tragically, his main motivation. Thankfully, Esposito realizes the lasting trauma this action will have on his family.

“The light at the end of the tunnel is ‘Breaking Bad,'” Esposito recounts. His breakthrough role as Gus Fring would ultimately change his life and career trajectory forever.

With renewed success, Esposito has hinted at his interest in a Gus Fring prequel series. In a British GQ interview, he expressed a desire to explore the villain’s backstory, suggesting a title like “The Rise of Gus.”
