Video shows protesters being detained at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond
Police in Richmond responded to protesters on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus Monday.

Dozens of protesters gathered near the university’s library in an area they called a “liberation zone,” according to WWBT. Videos from the coalition showed officers in riot gear grabbing individuals and throwing one to the ground while shouting: “Stop resisting. You are under arrest.”
In a statement to CNN, Virginia Commonwealth University said the rally “violated several university policies.”
“VCU has respectfully and repeatedly provided the individuals involved – many of whom are not students – with the opportunity to pick up their belongings and leave. Those who do not come out will be arrested for trespassing,” said the university.
Both students and non-students have been arrested and the university is dismantling the encampment, according to Virginia Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. He noted “a large number” of non-students were in the crowd. A Virginia State Police spokesman said the department responded to the protest to assist campus police.

In an advisory Monday afternoon on its website, the university initially described the protest as “violent,” but later removed the advisory language from its website and instead described the rally as a “public assembly.”
A university spokesperson declined to comment when asked about the language change.
