There were tense moments in the White House Situation Room as Iran launched the attack, US officials said

US President Joe Biden gathered Saturday night with his national security team for a “real-time update” on Iran’s attack on Israel amid what a senior administration official described as a “tense moment” in the White House Situation Room.

One of the latest pieces of information the president received was the timing of the missile launches, including when “more than 100 ballistic missiles” were launched in a matter of minutes and when the results were unclear, the official said.

In total, Iran launched more than 300 “air strikes,” a senior military official told reporters Sunday. When it became clear that Israeli defenses had successfully thwarted the attack, “there was some relief,” the official said.

“It wasn’t long after we believed the attack was largely defeated. The president reaffirmed our unwavering support for Israel’s defense,” the senior military official said of the call between Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
On Sunday, the president gathered his advisers earlier in the Situation Room, according to the same senior military official. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer, and Middle East coordinator Brett McGurk were all present, the official said.

Preparations for Saturday’s attack began nearly two weeks ago, senior officials of the same administration said, including when Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and National Security Adviser Sullivan briefed the president on the “possible deployment of additional troops” during the Japanese prime minister’s visit to Washington last week.

CNN’s Priscilla Alvarez contributed to this report.
