Tesla to resolve fatal Autopilot crash
Electric car giant Tesla has agreed to settle a lawsuit over a 2018 crash that killed Apple engineer Walter Huang after his Model X, which was operating on Autopilot, crashed into a highway barrier.
The case, brought by Mr Huang’s family, is scheduled to begin in California Superior Court this week.
If the trial goes ahead, it will bring increased scrutiny of the firm’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving technology.
Terms of the settlement were not disclosed and reports say the deal still needs to be approved by a judge. Tesla did not immediately respond to the BBC’s request for comment.
Prior to the settlement, Tesla argued that Mr. Huang had abused the system because he was playing a video game shortly before the accident.
The firm previously won a trial in California arguing that the driver in question did not follow its instructions to maintain attention while using the system.
The electric vehicle (EV) maker is facing a series of lawsuits over accidents related to the alleged use of its driver assistance technology.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also investigated several accidents involving Autopilot.
For years, Tesla has promised to produce an autonomous car but has yet to launch it.
On Friday, Mr. Musk said the company plans to introduce a self-driving robotaxi in August.
The settlement with Mr Huang’s family comes at a time when the company is struggling with weakening sales.
Shipments fell sharply in the first three months of the year as Tesla grappled with fires at its European factories, global shipping disruptions and growing competition.
Tesla has cut prices repeatedly in response to increased competition from rivals such as BYD but demand in key markets such as China has fallen.
Tesla shares have lost nearly a third of their value since the start of the year.
