Police arrested dozens in a demonstration at the Art Institute of Chicago, including students
About 50 people were arrested outside the Art Institute of Chicago during a demonstration on Saturday, according to the institute.
A demonstration, including several students of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, began Saturday morning in the museum’s North Park, according to a spokeswoman for the institute.
As time passed, protesters “pushed a security officer and stole their museum keys, blocked emergency exits, and barricaded fences,” according to the spokesperson.
Officials offered the group a new location to continue their protest, but they declined. “During several rounds of negotiations, SAIC student protesters were promised amnesty from academic sanctions and trespassing charges if they agreed to relocate,” the spokesperson said.
Negotiations continued for about five hours and an agreement was never reached.
Chicago police decided to end the protest in the “safest way possible” and arrested about 50 people, according to the spokesman.
