Middle East “on the brink of regional war,” EU foreign policy chief warns
The EU’s top diplomat warned on Thursday that the Middle East is on the brink of regional war, and that European leaders must call on Israel for a “controlled response” to Iranian airstrikes over the weekend.
Iran launched the attack in retaliation for a suspected Israeli attack on its consulate in Syria earlier this month.
“We cannot increase. We cannot go step by step to answer each time higher (until we reach) a regional war,” said Josep Borrell when he arrived in Italy for a meeting with G7 foreign ministers.
“We are on the brink of a regional war with the Middle East that will send shockwaves around the world, but especially to Europe.”
Borrell said that “humanitarian support has increased very little” for Gaza and that aid reaching the enclave is “grossly inadequate.”
His comments came a day after British Foreign Secretary David Cameron called on the world’s biggest economy to harmonize sanctions on Iran, to show a “united front.”
The EU has announced it will expand sanctions against Iran following the Islamic Republic’s attacks
“We have decided to impose sanctions on Iran, it is a clear signal that we want to send,” European Council President Charles Michel said on Wednesday at an EU summit.
The US also plans to impose new sanctions targeting Iran following its attacks.
