Marvel’s Russo Brothers say superhero fatigue isn’t the reason for underperforming projects
The Russo Brothers, known for blockbuster Marvel movies like “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” don’t think superhero fatigue is the main reason for the studio’s recent lackluster performance.
They believe the challenges facing Marvel reflect larger changes in the way media is consumed and the way audiences engage with stories.
“It’s a Hollywood-wide issue, not just Marvel,” Joe Russo told GamesRadar+. “We’re in a transition period where people are still figuring out how they want stories to be told and what kind of stories they want.”
He points out the generation gap in media consumption habits. Older audiences are accustomed to a scheduled viewing experience in theaters, while younger generations demand instant gratification and rapid consumption. Russo states, “…the new generation is ‘I want it now, I want to process it now’, then move on to the next thing…”
This rapid shift, where communication often boils down to “memes and headlines,” challenges the traditional two-hour film format. Russo believes a reinvention of the format will happen.
Anthony Russo agreed, attributing the audience upheaval to general fatigue rather than targeting superhero movies specifically. Discussions of superhero fatigue predate their days with Marvel, but genres like Westerns have been able to survive the same complaints by continuing to reinvent themselves.
With the comic book movie genre taking center stage, stars like Paul Dano (“The Batman”) told the Independent he sees potential benefits in this period of uncertainty, hoping it can bring a fresh cinematic approach. Joseph Quinn, who is preparing to join the MCU in the new “Fantastic Four”, told Entertainment Weekly that remains optimistic, focusing on the narrative and different talents associated with the project.
