Kremlin critic Kara-Murza won a Pulitzer Prize for a column written from a prison cell
Vladimir Kara-Murza, a prominent Russian human rights advocate and critic of the Kremlin, has won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary written from his prison cell.
Kara-Murza is serving a 25-year prison sentence for publicly criticizing Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The punishment has been widely condemned by the international community as cruel and politically motivated.
According to Monday’s Pulitzer announcement, Kara-Murza was awarded the prize for “passionate columns” as a contributor to The Washington Post from prison in Russia “at great personal risk.”
His writing “warns of the consequences of dissent in Vladimir Putin’s Russia and insists on a democratic future for his country,” he said.
The writer’s wife, Evgenia Kara-Murza, told the Washington Post on Monday that she was “absolutely heartbroken” that her husband could not be present to “accept this high distinction himself.”
He thanked the Post “for making sure that Vladimir’s voice was heard.”
Kara-Murza was initially arrested in April 2022, hours after an interview with CNN in which she criticized the “murderous regime” of the Russian president.
Critics of the Kremlin have been tried on criminal charges that include treason, spreading fake news about the Russian military and facilitating the activities of undesirable organizations.
Russia criminalized criticism of the military following the massive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The court said he will serve his sentence “in a strict regime correctional colony.”
Kara-Murza has long criticized Putin and has survived two poisonings.
In March 2022, he spoke before the Arizona House of Representatives against the war. In an April 2022 interview with CNN, the political dissident condemned the Putin regime for targeting critics.
He was arrested shortly after for “failure to comply with law enforcement orders,” according to his wife.
