Katy Perry jokes about ‘American Idol’ wardrobe malfunction, gets candid about leaving the show

Katy Perry has never been one to shy away from wacky fashion, and this week on “American Idol,” her quirky choice of top almost turned into an embarrassing moment.

On Monday’s episode of the reality singing competition series, the pop star and longtime “Idol” judge appeared torn. To be safe, Perry held her clothes with her hands and also used a pillow for extra protection of one eye.

He later spoke to Entertainment Tonight, joking that the incident wasn’t a “malfunction” and more of a “moment for TV.”

“I think it’s a physical expression in me that just wants to burst at the seams,” quips Perry. The interviewer pointed out that fellow judge Luke Bryan may have bumped into her, causing her top to break. “He’s always, like, setting me up,” she said jokingly.

Since this is her last season as an “American Idol” judge, the “Teenage Dream” singer called it “wild,” adding that “it’s been blown.”

Perry has been a judge for seven seasons, alongside Lionel Richie and Bryan since 2018.

He also mentioned his reasons for leaving the show at this time, telling ET, “I’m just trying to make room for other things. It’s not like me ending this show means I’m going to retire on an island, although that would be great.”

“I’m going to work,” he added, nodding to his recently teased next album, which is now being referred to as “KP6.”

Perry’s last album, “Smile,” was released in 2020.
