Israel’s common sense has been replaced by revenge, says Ireland’s new prime minister
Ireland’s newly appointed prime minister told CNN that Israeli common sense had been “replaced by revenge” as he addressed recent tensions between the Israeli and Irish governments.
In his first televised interview since being appointed last week, Taoiseach Simon Harris hit back at recent criticism from Israel’s foreign ministry and Israel’s Ambassador to Ireland Dana Erlich, accusing the country of “being on the wrong side of history” when it comes to the war in Gaza.
“Excuse me because it’s a bit difficult to see where the representative of the (Benjamin) Netanyahu government is talking about being on the wrong side because I think the actions of the Netanyahu government now, in terms of allowing this humanitarian catastrophe to unfold in Gaza, and its impact on women, children, public and public infrastructure is very deep,” Harris told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour.
Harris went on to say that “Ireland has been very clear in its condemnation of Hamas… and Israel’s right to be able to live safely and securely. But we also believe that reason has now been replaced by revenge.”
The prime minister doubled down on his calls for an “immediate cessation of hostilities” in Gaza and his plans to convince fellow European Union leaders to formally recognize a Palestinian state. Harris noted that a peaceful solution to the war in Gaza “involves several like-minded countries coming together to recognize a Palestinian state.”
Israel’s foreign ministry has condemned Ireland’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state, maintaining in a news release last week that doing so would award Hamas “a gift for terrorism.”
