Israel has again accused the UN of “reasoning” over aid for Gaza – but the UN says shipments are facing key checkpoint delays
The war of words between the Israeli agency that approves humanitarian aid for Gaza and the UN agency that receives and delivers it continues unabated.
On Wednesday the Coordination of Israeli Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) posted a video of aid sitting at the Kerem Shalom intersection in X, adding: “This is what the contents of 700 aid trucks look like. It is waiting on the Gaza side of Kerem Shalom to be picked up by the @UN agency.”
COGAT added: “We are increasing our capabilities. All the UN is doing is making excuses. Aid needs to be collected and sent. The UN needs to do its job.”
On Tuesday, the UN official responsible for coordinating the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza said there had been some progress in dealing with the Israeli authorities but added that “for every new opportunity that is given to us, we will find another challenge to deal with.”
Andrea De Domenico, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, said aid deliveries in Gaza faced significant checkpoint delays and last week 41% of UN requests to deliver aid to northern Gaza were denied.
Speaking from Jerusalem, De Domenico said: “We cannot accept and we are faced with this dance where we do one step forward, two steps back, or two steps forward, one step back, which basically leaves us always at the same point. So it’s very difficult for us to raise the level we want in humanitarian operations.”
