Germany’s foreign minister flew to Israel in an effort to ease tensions
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is traveling to Israel Tuesday in an effort to defuse the Israeli-Iranian conflict, following Iran’s unprecedented attack on Israel Sunday.
“It is very important for us as the German government in these critical times that we all work together to contribute to de-escalation for the entire region,” Baerbock said during a joint press conference with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, in Berlin.
He accused Iran of not being interested in regional peace and said it wanted to add fuel to the fire.
“Iran is playing with the fate of everyone in the Middle East,” he said. “This applies especially to Iran and its proxies and proxy groups, such as Hezbollah or the Houthis.”
Baerbock’s visit to Israel will be his eighth visit to the region since October 7. He also said he hoped the recent talks between Israel and Hamas could bring about a “long-awaited sustainable ceasefire.”
