Chinese company manufactures carbon neutral earphones

A Shenzhen-based company on Monday released the world’s first zero-carbon open-back earphones, the latest in a series of technological breakthroughs fast-tracked by China’s “dual carbon goal”.

The Cleer ARC 3, manufactured by Shenzhen Grandsun Electronic Co., Ltd., was launched in Shenzhen, a technology hub in southern China’s Guangdong Province, to coincide with the global Earth Day celebration on Monday.

The device features enhanced AI functionality and an open-ear design, which allows users to be constantly aware of the sounds in their environment.

Wu Haiquan, the company’s president, said ARC 3 has obtained a carbon neutrality certificate by maximizing the use of recycled materials, green electricity and equipment that consumes less power.

Carbon neutral production is a new and rapidly growing trend for consumer electronics. Apple last year announced its first carbon neutral watch and has plans to make all its products carbon neutral by 2030.

Industry insiders say that while more food and beverage products have achieved carbon neutrality in recent years, it’s still rare for consumer electronics, whose production can involve hundreds of components and long supply chains, to make the same breakthrough.

“It is our hope to set an example and encourage other companies in the sector and throughout the supply chain to follow suit,” said Wu. “Releasing more carbon-neutral products to the market can also help foster a trend of low-carbon consumption.”

Established in 1997 primarily as a supplier for global brands, Grandsun launched the Cleer brand in 2012.

The company is committed to zero-carbon production in part in response to China’s calls for its manufacturers to shrink their carbon footprint, according to Wu.

Under the “dual carbon goal” of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, China is vigorously pushing for the use of clean energy and the application of green technology in the manufacturing sector.

In terms of consumption, the country is already the world’s largest market for new energy vehicles (NEVs).

Mickael Lefebvre, Grandsun’s chief technology officer, said the low-carbon product ecosystem is growing rapidly in China, which benefits the development of new carbon-neutral products such as ARC 3.

“If consumers are already buying electric cars and refrigerators that emit less, then it’s not a big leap for them to think that their other devices need to have a smaller carbon footprint. It’s a natural progression,” he said.
