Cal Poly Humboldt urges students occupying building to “leave campus safely now”

California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, asked students who participated in the demonstration and occupation of at least two buildings to “leave the campus peacefully.”

“Individuals occupying Siemens Hall and Nelson Hall East, or camping illegally in the vicinity of those facilities, are urged to leave campus peacefully now,” the university said in a statement Sunday night.
The request came a day after the university announced it had closed its campus and moved to isolated classes and exams until the end of the semester following protests.

Administrators have accused protesters of trying to break into locked buildings “with the intent of either locking themselves in, damaging or stealing equipment.”

If protesters leave campus voluntarily, the university said it may consider that option as a “possible mitigating factor” during the proceedings and when deciding what discipline the student will face.

“This does not, however, eliminate responsibility for any possible criminal conduct or accusations,” the university said.
