After an exchange with Caitlin Clark at the press conference, the columnist will not be covering the Indiana Fever game

IndyStar sports columnist Gregg Doyel “will not be covering the Indiana Fever,” an IndyStar spokesperson told CNN in a statement Tuesday.

In April, Doyel had an unpleasant exchange during Caitlin Clark’s introductory press conference as the newest member of the WNBA team.

The IndyStar writer made a heart with his hand to Clark, a gesture Clark used often during his college basketball career.

Clark replied, “You like that?” Doyel replied, “I love that you’re here,” and Clark explained, “Yeah, I do that in my family after every game.” Then Doyel added, “Start doing it to me and we’ll be fine.”

Doyel apologized the same day, stating in a post on X, “My comments afterward were clumsy and awkward. I sincerely apologize.” She added in a separate post on X: “Caitlin Clark, I’m sorry. Today I was part of the problem,” a version of her apology column published in the IndyStar last month.

Gannett, IndyStar’s parent company, did not respond to CNN’s inquiry as to whether Doyel would cover the rest of the season at all.

CNN has reached out to Doyel for comment.

Doyel’s last article was published on April 29 on the Indianapolis Colts NFL draft.

Clark and the Fever kick off their 25th regular season next Tuesday on the road against the Connecticut Sun.
