23 people were arrested at Indiana University Bloomington, police said
Officers arrested at least 23 people Saturday after a protest camp formed at Indiana University Bloomington, according to the school’s police department.
Police said a group of protesters erected tents and canopies Friday night “with the expressed intention of occupying university space indefinitely,” and that unapproved “temporary or permanent structures” violated school policy.
Video from the school’s student newspaper, the Indiana Daily Student, showed officers in riot gear carrying shields and batons as they tried to clear the encampment. Police could be seen pushing protesters as they tried to break through the locked arms, and at least four officers were seen dragging someone out of the camp.
In a statement, the Indiana University Police Department said it approached protesters outside the school’s Dunn Meadow around noon ET, along with Indiana State Police. Authorities said they gave protesters “six verbal warnings” to move their encampments, before arresting those who did not move their structures.
Police said the 23 people arrested face “charges ranging from criminal trespass to resisting law enforcement.” Police said they had not confirmed how many of those arrested were directly linked to the university.
CNN has contacted state police and the Monroe County Sheriff’s office.
In a release Saturday, the university said, “IU encourages and respects freedom of expression, including the right to protest and demonstrate peacefully,” but said students, faculty, staff and visitors are expected to abide by school policy and state law.
