Zelensky said the Ukrainian army had stabilized part of the Kharkiv region

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that his defense and security forces had succeeded in “partially stabilizing the situation” in the northern Kharkiv region, where Russian troops were making advances.

Zelensky said Wednesday night that Ukrainian forces continued defensive operations in areas near the Russian border and in Vovchansk, located about 60 kilometers (37 miles) northeast of Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv.

The border town of Vovchansk was liberated from Russian occupation more than 18 months ago when Ukraine recaptured Kharkiv.

Zelensky said his troops were using artillery, drones, and infantry to stop the Russian advance.

He said all other areas on Ukraine’s front line were treated with the “same attention” as the Kharkiv region and that the Russian attack would not lead to defense gaps elsewhere along the front line.

“We clearly see how the invaders are trying to distract our forces and make our combat work less focused. We react to this exactly as we should – we must have a way of retaliating against the enemy in every direction.”
The Ukrainian military echoed Zelensky’s words, saying that the army “continues to carry out defensive and stabilization measures in Vovchansk and keeps the situation under control there.”

Russia launched a surprise cross-border attack on May 10, targeting the Kharkiv region.

Ukrainian officials on Wednesday called the city of Vovchansk the center of heavy fighting. Russia has already taken over nine villages near the border in recent days.
