USC initiates disciplinary process for campus members who “violate both our policies and laws”

The University of Southern California is initiating a disciplinary process for campus members “who have violated both our policies and laws,” President Carol L. Folt said in a statement Friday.

“Freedom of speech is one of our core values, and throughout the year, faculty, staff, and students have held legal marches, vigils, and peaceful demonstrations,” he said in the statement. “But let me be absolutely clear: freedom of speech and assembly does not include the right to prevent equal access to campus, damage property, or incite harassment, violence and threats. No one has the right to prevent the normal functioning of our university, including commencement. ”
The university will take any further action necessary to keep the campus safe and uphold legal obligations, Folt said.

USC will hold a “family graduate celebration” on May 9, the school announced Friday, just over a week after canceling the main graduation ceremony.
