US Navy has spent $1 billion on weapons to thwart attacks in Middle East, US Navy Secretary says

The US Navy has spent nearly $1 billion on weapons to thwart “more than 130 direct attacks” on US military and merchant ships in the Middle East over the past six months, the US Navy Secretary said on Tuesday.

US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro urged lawmakers on Tuesday to pass an additional national security package to add ammunition.

“During the past six months …. we actually overcame over 130 direct attacks on US Navy ships and merchant ships,” Del Toro told the Senate Appropriations Committee.
“These counterattack-critical munitions are very important to the Department of the Navy,” Del Toro said.

“We are currently approaching $1 billion in ammunition that we will need to replenish at some point. So the more than $2 billion allocated in additional is critical for our Navy and Marine Corps to be able to replenish that ammunition and continue to provide the kind of defensive measures we had six and a half months ago now.”
