The UN Security Council is calling for better protection for humanitarian workers in Gaza

The 15-member United Nations Security Council, led by Switzerland and supported by more than 90 countries, passed a resolution on Friday emphasizing the need to improve the safety and security of humanitarian workers in Gaza, especially those who are recruited locally and face significant risks.

The resolution, adopted by 14 countries with Russia abstaining, expressed “deep concern” about the vulnerability of aid workers and called for “concerted efforts and concrete risk reduction strategies.”

UN aid chief Martin Griffiths welcomed the decision and emphasized the devastating impact of Israel’s military operation in Gaza’s southernmost city, Rafah.

“The ground invasion in Rafah has displaced more than 800,000 people, fleeing again in fear of their lives and arriving in areas without adequate shelter, toilets and clean water,” Griffiths said in a written statement on Friday.
“With today’s adoption of Security Council Resolution 2730 calling for the protection of humanitarian workers and the order of the International Court of Justice to open the Rafah crossing to provide aid at scale and stop military attacks there, this is a moment of clarity,” added Griffiths. , referring to Friday’s ruling from the world court.
