The president of the University of Chicago signaled that schools could intervene in campus encampments

University of Chicago President Paul Alivisatos spoke to the school community about the ongoing encampment, saying the school had “reached that point” and would “intervene” because of the disruption and safety to the campus community.

“On Monday, I stated that we will only intervene if what may be an exercise in free expression impedes the learning or expression of others or significantly interferes with the functioning or security of the University. Without an agreement to end the camps, we have reached that point,” said Alivisatos.
The president said the encampment, located in the university’s Main Quadrangle, had “created a systematic disruption of the campus” and “violations of policy only increased.”

Despite holding a meeting with a group of protesters to find a way to end the encampment, Alivisatos said they could not find common ground and the demands “so we could not agree.”

CNN has reached out to the university and campus police for more information.
