Russian skate bomb attack injures at least 21 people in Ukraine’s Kharkiv

At least 21 civilians, including two 12-year-old girls and an 8-year-old boy, were injured in a Russian attack on Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, on Tuesday, prosecutors said.

Russian troops used cruise bombs in three waves of attacks, hitting more than 20 targets, according to Oleksandr Filchakov, Kharkiv regional prosecutor.

Glide bombs can carry hundreds of kilograms of explosives and be dropped from aircraft that — in the case of the attack in the Kharkiv border region — did not even have to enter Ukrainian airspace.

Writing on Telegram, Filchakov said that several apartment blocks, shopping malls, and educational institutions were damaged in the bombing that also set cars and garages on fire.

The attack came as Russian troops continued their advance into the Kharkiv region. Russian forces regained control of villages and areas in Ukraine that they had forced since almost the end of 2022 during Ukrainian counter-offensives.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service on Tuesday said more than 7,500 civilians had been evacuated from their homes during heavy fighting in northern Kharkiv region.

Reporting live from central Ukraine, CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh said Russian forces are moving faster and have better resources and better ammunition. It is also clear that Ukraine has failed to build adequate defenses in the region.

Ukraine is calling for more rocket-propelled grenades and missiles to be sent to them as a priority, especially 155mm rounds, so that it can repel a resurgent Russian invasion force.
