Protesters disrupt University of Michigan School of Music, Theater & Dance commencement ceremony

Protesters disrupted the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theater & Dance commencement ceremony on Friday, according to video from a reporter with CNN affiliate the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Several protesters entered the Bukit Auditorium with pro-Palestinian signs and flags. Someone was heard shouting “get out” as protesters walked through the auditorium.

Police arrived shortly after the incident, according to the Times-Dispatch.

CNN has reached out to the University of Michigan and its School of Music, Theater & Dance for comment.

Later Friday evening, a large group of protesters met with police on the University of Michigan campus on Friday evening. The group was outside the Art Museum on campus and could be heard chanting as they interacted with police.

Some context: Commencement at the University of Michigan is underway with a program of hosting separate events with distinguished speakers. Spring graduation is scheduled for the entire university on Saturday at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. There will be a designated area for protests outside the ceremony site, the University of Michigan said on its website, noting all commencement events will include security checks, ban banners and flags, and be monitored by volunteers who will immediately “respond to disturbances, starting with warnings .”
