At least 1,993 children in Ukraine have been killed or injured since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022, according to the United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF).

On average, at least two children die in Ukraine every day, UNICEF reported on Tuesday.

“Ukrainian children are in dire need of safety, stability, access to safe learning, child protection services and psychosocial support,” the agency said in a statement. “More than anything, Ukrainian children need peace.”
Mental health impact: The war in Ukraine has “taken a toll” on children’s mental health and well-being, UNICEF said, adding that half of teenagers report sleep problems. At least one in five experience intrusive thoughts and flashbacks.

Loss of education: Almost half of the children enrolled in school in Ukraine have been personally robbed of an education, according to the report. Nearly one million children across the country cannot access any face-to-face learning “because of insecurity,” UNICEF said.

Earlier this year, CNN reported on Ukrainian children attending a newly built fortified school in the northern city of Kharkiv as daily Russian attacks hit.
