Musk’s Starlink satellite is disrupted by a massive solar storm

Starlink, the satellite arm of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, warned on Saturday of “degraded service” as Earth was hit by the biggest geomagnetic storm from solar activity in two decades.

Starlink owns around 60% of the approximately 7,500 satellites orbiting the Earth and is the dominant player in the satellite internet.

Musk said earlier in a broadcast on X that the Starlink satellites are under a lot of stress due to geomagnetic storms, but are holding up so far.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the storm was the largest since October 2003 and was likely to continue into the weekend, posing risks to navigation systems, the power grid and satellite navigation, among other services.

Thousands of Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit use laser links between satellites to transmit data to each other in space at the speed of light, enabling the network to offer worldwide internet coverage.
