Egypt’s foreign minister spoke with Israeli and Iranian officials about maintaining peace in the region

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held talks with his Israeli and Iranian counterparts to uphold “calm and peace,” as world leaders sought to contain the risk of a wider regional war.

Shoukry told CNN’s Becky Anderson that the mutual targeting between Israel and Iran “is not at all conducive to addressing long-standing issues and conflicts in the region.”

“This will lead us into an endless cycle of retaliation that will only lead to a wider-scale confrontation, with dire consequences for both peoples in both countries,” Shoukry said.
Regional tensions are on the rise: It comes after Iran launched an attack on Israel over the weekend, in retaliation for a suspected Israeli attack on Tehran’s consulate in Damascus, in Syria. As Israeli officials discuss their response, regional officials and Israel’s allies have warned of rising tensions over Israeli military strikes in Gaza. Negotiations for a hostage agreement and ceasefire in Gaza are ongoing, according to Shoukry.

Israeli attack on Rafah: Israel has postponed plans for an expected ground attack on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where most Palestinians have been forced to flee Israeli bombardment. When asked if Egypt could temporarily allow the entry of Gaza refugees following the military action in Rafah, Shoukry said Egypt will continue to act in the best interest of the Palestinian people. The mass displacement of Palestinians caused by Israeli military action in Rafah would constitute a “war crime,” he added.
